Preserving Versatility in Event-Based Middleware

چکیده
Existing commercial and research event-based middleware are limited in their ability to evolve in order to support the requirements of novel applications. As a result, new infrastructures are being proposed to attend to widening scope and changing demands. In this paper, we define the concept of versatility generally and survey existing approaches that can be used to develop and preserve versatility in middleware. We discuss our research in designing, implementing, and preserving versatility in event-based middleware using YANCEES, a versatile event notification service we are developing. The design of the system is briefly presented and the lessons learned

FACTS - A rule-based middleware architecture for wireless sensor networks
Introducing a middleware abstraction layer into wireless sensor networks is a widely accepted solution to facilitate application programming and allow network organization. In this paper, we argue that although an event-based approach is the most obvious solution, it also provides the most natural way to address software development in wireless sensor networks. As a proof of concept, we introdu...
متن کاملRealizing IoT service’s policy privacy over publish/subscribe-based middleware
The publish/subscribe paradigm makes IoT service collaborations more scalable and flexible, due to the space, time and control decoupling of event producers and consumers. Thus, the paradigm can be used to establish large-scale IoT service communication infrastructures such as Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition systems. However, preserving IoT service's policy privacy is difficult in this...
متن کاملAccess control in ultra-large-scale systems using a data-centric middleware
The primary characteristic of an Ultra-Large-Scale (ULS) system is ultra-large size on any related dimension. A ULS system is generally considered as a system-of-systems with heterogeneous nodes and autonomous domains. As the size of a system-of-systems grows, and interoperability demand between sub-systems is increased, achieving more scalable and dynamic access control system becomes an im...
متن کاملPrivacy-Preserving Triggers for Pervasive Spaces
Providing pervasive services often necessitates gathering information about individuals that may be considered sensitive. Often, one is forced to make a difficult choice: either to risk loss of privacy or to let go of the benefits pervasive technology offers. Our conjecture is that such a choice is not always necessary. It is possible to design data collection strategies in such a way that serv...
متن کاملHermes: A scalable event-based middleware
Large-scale distributed systems require new middleware paradigms that do not suffer from the limitations of traditional request/reply middleware. These limitations include tight coupling between components, a lack of information filtering capabilities, and support for one-to-one communication semantics only. We argue that event-based middleware is a scalable and powerful new type of middleware ...
